Our subfloor insulation works two ways:

Bulk Insulation:

We always use an insulation referred to as “bulk insulation”. That means that it’s a type of insulation that for one is bulky, but also it traps still air inside it to create its insulative qualities like R-value, and airflow reduction aka draught proofing.

Thermal resistance (R-value): 

The amount of resistance slows thermal flow (outdoor temperature)  through the floor construction, the higher the R-value, the better the resistance to heat transfer. That means less cold air rising through the floor in winter and fewer freezing toes. 

Airflow reduction: 

Properly installed subfloor insulation (and good draught sealing) reduces convective airflow in the subfloor cavity, limiting the chimney-like movement of air that drags conditioned air through the floor boards and out of your home.
